Notes 1 & 2

MacBeth

-Macbeth is fairly simple
(rise and fall of a man)

Act 3 He's already king... no where to go but down

-Hamlet talks to us and we see him transparently
-Macbeth doesnt connnect to audience (no real humor)

Scene with Porter.. humor?

-Not a plot driven paly.. it's a character play
-Macbeth is a tragic character because he was highly successful and honorable
(all this had promise and potential)
-By the end of the play he is isolated and caused his own downfall in a sense.

-Loss came about from his own free decisions
-Architect of his own destruction
-His death was his consequence (suicide) caused his own death

-Why isn't Macbeth happy with what he has.. needs more
(ambitious)

Lady Macbeth

She doesn't face the fact of what she's done. (can't accept the emotional consequences)
She is an outward killing force.
The Relationship-Macbeth and Lady M.

Beginning of play they are on the same page.
After crowned king he leaves LadyM out of lots.
Macbeth is determined to set his life in order; he wants peace of mind. *His focus is psychological not political.
He is murdering his way to a peace of mind.
Once LM dies, Macbeth just accepts is and gives up.
He can't escape the reality he has created.
Witches:

Shakespeare intends us not to forget that evil forces in life.
They are a symbol of fate?
Tease Macbeth to make bad decisions.
Macbeth was looking for a reason to kill Duncan and the Witches gave him a reason and solidified his ideas.
Their purpose is to torment people.
Their promises come true, but not in the same way the character thinks it will.
Witches appeal to what Macbeth wants to believe.
Witches = dark impulses in a person's life/mind.
Terri Eagleton believes that the witches are a positive force in Macbeth
